Dr. Dre’s estranged wife demands the return of valuable trademarks.

by Shakeria Northcross, Esq.

Dr. Dre and Nicole Young are in the middle of a divorce. Their divorce has led Nicole to demand for Dr. Dre to return the trademarks that he allegedly transferred to a different company so that he would be considered their sole owner. There are about six trademarks which include his stage name “Dre. Dre” and his album's title “The Chronic.”

What can entrepreneurs learn from this trademark battle?

  1. Trademark your creations because your trademarks are valuable assets.

  2. The owner of a trademark should properly be named in its application.

  3. Trademarks are valuable enough to become the topic of discussion during a divorce.

  4. Trademarks are assets that should be included in your estate planning and marital agreements.
